In a landmark statement from the World Health Organization, they explain that “evidence from well-controlled human experimental research indicates that CBD is not associated with abuse potential.”

A substance as gentle and non-intoxicating as cannabidiol simply doesn’t illustrate the characteristics of a typically abused “drug.” CBD won’t provide any euphoric feelings or impair your cognitive functioning in any way, leaving it to be low-risk in terms of abuse. 

A lot of people assume that CBD oil can be addictive because they think that marijuana products promote addiction. Interestingly enough, you won’t even get physically addicted to marijuana. That’s not possible, either. However, marijuana-based products are much more habit-forming and can create addictive tendencies. (We’ll talk about that more in a moment, though.)

And that’s because they tend to have higher levels of THC than just 0.3%. It is the THC in marijuana products that drive the habit-forming properties that we talked about earlier.

Thus, marijuana-derived CBD products with more than 0.3% THC may be habit-forming — unlike hemp-derived CBD. What About Other Cannabis Products?

In general, CBD is regarded as safe and non-addictive for those who consume it. You cannot overdose on the product, and it doesn’t provide intoxicating effects that can impair you in any way. (If your CBD product does do that, then it likely wasn’t pure CBD.) However, there are still some side effects you should be aware of if you consume more CBD than your body is comfortable with. Okay, but how do you avoid having too much CBD? The best thing to remember when consuming CBD is low and slow: low doses, and slow increases. 

If you’ve never had CBD before, you want to make sure you begin with a low dose to see how your body reacts. Typically, this is about five milligrams or so depending on your weight and height. After consuming, give your body ample time to process the cannabinoids (usually about an hour if you had CBD oil). If you find that this small of a dose didn’t do enough for you, then you can slowly increase your dose next time. Only go up a few milligrams to ensure comfortability. 

Over time, you may find yourself having to slightly increase your doses as your tolerances increase. This is normal! This doesn’t mean you’re becoming addicted to the cannabidiol; it just means your body is becoming used to having the substance. If you want to decrease your tolerance, you’ll have to take a break in consuming CBD and let your body flush out the residual cannabinoids.

Interestingly, sometimes people who have been taking CBD for awhile find that when they take less CBD, they still receive the benefits. Every person’s experience with CBD is unique in that way.

Is CBD oil addictive? No, it appears as though hemp-derived CBD doesn’t demonstrate addictive or habit-forming properties.
